Habitica solved something real: checking a box is boring, so make it pay XP. It has run on that insight for over a decade and it works. But it inherits the assumption every habit tracker makes — that you already know what you should be doing, and simply aren’t doing it. For a lot of men, that assumption is the whole problem.
The one structural difference
In Habitica, you author the list. You create the Habits, Dailies and To-Dos, you decide their difficulty, and the game rewards completion. The RPG layer sits on top of your own plan.
In Dominaite, the app authors the list. A short diagnostic sets your level, and each day you are issued a small number of specific missions calibrated to it. You do not open a blank screen and negotiate with yourself about what today should contain.
That is the entire fork in the road. Everything below follows from it.
Where Habitica is the better choice
This page exists to sell you an app, so treat the following as the part that costs us something to write — and weight it accordingly.
- You already have a plan you believe in. If your routine is settled and you just want it to feel less like a chore, a tracker is the right shape of tool and Habitica is a very good one.
- You want co-op, not competition. Parties, guilds and boss battles where a friend’s missed day hurts the group is a genuinely different motivational engine, and Dominaite does not replicate it.
- You want free, permanently. Habitica’s core game is free. Dominaite is free to start but gates its escalation layer.
- You want it on desktop and the web. Habitica runs everywhere. Dominaite is a mobile app — iOS today, Android in review.
Where Dominaite is built differently
1. The assignment is generated, not authored
Every morning spent deciding what to do spends the budget you needed for doing it. Dominaite moves that decision out of the moment — missions arrive already specific and already sized. The willpower required drops to whatever it takes to open the app. The full argument for assigned work is here.
2. Difficulty tracks your capability
A habit tracker treats week 1 and week 40 identically — the box is the same size forever. Dominaite raises mission difficulty as you improve, and Hard Mode raises it further for a higher XP multiplier. A system that never costs you anything stops changing you.
3. The work is scored, not just attended
Habitica records that you did something. Dominaite’s AI reviews the actual artifact where one exists — the meal, the outfit, the shipped work, the photo — and returns a verdict and one next action. Attendance and quality are not the same measurement.
4. Four pillars, one score
Habitica is domain-agnostic; a Daily is a Daily whether it is push-ups or invoicing. Dominaite is organised around four pillars — money, fitness, status and relationships — that roll into a single score, because the consistency problem is the same across all four and the fixes compound. See the four-pillar breakdown.
Side by side
- Who picks the tasks — Habitica: you. Dominaite: generated from a diagnostic and your history.
- Difficulty over time — Habitica: fixed. Dominaite: escalates, plus an opt-in Hard Mode.
- Missing a day — Habitica: your character takes damage. Dominaite: an earned shield absorbs it.
- Social layer — Habitica: co-op parties and guilds. Dominaite: weekly leagues and live rooms.
- Feedback — Habitica: completion only. Dominaite: AI review of the work itself.
- Platforms — Habitica: iOS, Android, web. Dominaite: iOS, with Android in review.
If you are switching
Do not migrate your Habitica list. It was written by the version of you that needed a tracker, and re-importing it recreates the same plan in a new app. Run the diagnostic cold and let the first week of missions be generated. Compare that against your old list afterwards — if they match, you had the right plan and Habitica was serving you fine.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dominaite a direct Habitica replacement?
Not exactly. Habitica is a habit tracker with RPG mechanics layered on top — you define the habits, it rewards you for checking them off. Dominaite generates the assignment itself from a diagnostic and your recent history, then scores the quality of the work. If you already know precisely what you should be doing every day, Habitica is a lighter tool. If deciding what to do is the part you keep losing to, that is the gap Dominaite is built for.
Is Habitica free? Is Dominaite?
Habitica is free with an optional subscription, and its full XP and leveling system is available on the free tier. Dominaite is free to download and start; Pro and Elite unlock advanced missions, Hard Mode and unlimited AI coaching. If price is the deciding factor, Habitica is the cheaper product and that is a fair reason to choose it.
Does Dominaite have parties and guilds like Habitica?
Not in the same form. Habitica has parties, guilds and boss battles built around a shared quest. Dominaite runs weekly leagues that rank you against a small pool of men working the same pillars, plus live community rooms. It is competition between individuals rather than co-op raiding — closer to a leaderboard than a party.
What if I lose my streak?
Habitica damages your character when you miss dailies. Dominaite issues earned streak shields, so a missed day consumes a shield instead of destroying the run. When the shields are gone the streak does reset, but you get a structured restart rather than a cold start.
Which one is better for ADHD?
Neither is a medical tool and neither should be treated as one. In practice, people who struggle with executive function often report that the hard part is initiating, not tracking. That favours a system where the day is already decided for you. But Habitica has a far larger community and a decade of shared strategies, which is a real advantage. Try the free tiers of both before paying for either.
Stop authoring the quest. Take it.
Run the diagnostic, get today's missions, and see whether an assigned plan beats the one you wrote.
